This Association has countrywide volunteers who have had and recovered from postnatal depression. They support mothers who are currently experiencing this illness on a one-to-one basis. The Association is always prepared to offer advice to depressed mothers on a wide range of issues concerning the management and treatment of postnatal illness. Specialist advice is available. The Association works in co-operation with a number of other organisations. Partner support is offered and also phone and postal contact. Information is available in several different languages including Gujarati, Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi and Bengali.

This is a self-help support group run by volunteers who have experienced the problems of a crying and / or sleepless baby. Volunteers take telephone calls from parents who want help, practical advice, and reassurance about their baby or an opportunity to talk to someone who really understands. They have a National network of volunteers who aim to support emotionally and give practical help.

This is a group of mothers, most of whom have suffered postnatal depression or distress after the birth of one of more of their babies, who offer support, advice, information and most of all a listening ear for any worries or concerns to mothers in the Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire areas. They welcome calls from other areas but are unable to offer a full support service due to funding constraints.

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) offers information and support in pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood and aims to enable every parent to make informed choices. Local contacts change regularly so it’s best to phone London for a specific local contact when needed. Volunteers run the Helpline. Services include: Antenatal classes, Postnatal Support, Antenatal Teachers and Breastfeeding Counsellors.

PNI-UK is a registered charity for women and their families who have or think they have any type of postnatal depression / illness. This includes any distressing psychological and emotional condition which has developed during pregnancy, birth or during the postnatal period. The site provides useful information and a ‘chat area’.

The Birth Trauma Association supports all women who have had a traumatic birth experience. It is estimated that in the UK alone 10,000 women a year develop Postnatal Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PN-PTSD) following delivery. There are many similarities between PN-PTSD and postnatal depression and this site provides useful information and describes the emotional and practical support that is on offer to women and their families.
